About Delano, California
Delano is a city in Kern County, California. Delano is located approximately 30 miles north of Bakersfield. As of 2010, the population of Delano was 53,041. The largest industry in Delano is agriculture.
Delano History
Delano was founded in July 1869. Originally, the railroad from San Francisco terminated at Delano. The city’s name was officially given by the Southern Pacific Railroad in honor of Columbus Delano, the then Secretary of the Interior. The first Delano post office opened in 1874. Delano officially incorporated in 1913.
As the terminus to the railroad, Delano population was significant early on as it served as the headquarters for several hundred railroad workers. There was also quite a bit of freight flowing through Delano, including by land. There was even bullion flowing through Delano from nearby mines. The area was also fertile and full of crops. One of the favorite crops in the Delano area continues to be table grapes.
On September 8, 1965, the Filipino Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) started was became known as the Delano Grape Strike. Their mission was better wages and working conditions for the local farm workers. The National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), led by Cesar Chavez, joined the strike within days. During the strike, the two groups merged and formed the United Farm Workers of America (UFW). By 1970, the UFW won a contract with major grape growers across California.
Delano Events
The annual Cinco De Mayo celebration is held every year on May 5th at Memorial Park. This event celebrates Mexican culture with live entertainment and a carnival.

Also close by is the Tule Elk State Reserve, which protects the Tule elk. Popular local leisure spots include Lake Woollomes, Kern River and Isabella Lake. For skiing, Delano residents prefer the nearby Shirley Meadows Ski Area, located on Green Horn Mountain. The Kern National Wildlife Refuge is also nearby for those that love to spot birds and other native flora and fauna.
